Ardrossan Castle

Standing on a ridge above the town, the ruins of Ardrossan Castle is defended by a moat. The castle was originally owned by the Clan Barclay. It survived partial destruction during the Wars of Scottish Independence, before being rebuilt by Clan Montgomery during the 15th century. Oliver Cromwell was responsible for its condition in the 17th century, and the castle stones were to build Ayr Citadel.

The castle is reputedly haunted by the ghost of William Wallace, who is said to wander the ruins on stormy nights. The castle is also said to bear the mark of the Devil, with one of his hoofprints left in the rocks.
